Selecting ASTM B468 Alloy 20 Welded Tube, welded-and-drawn, or seamless tubing for your application is a complex process. Do you know that longitudinal welds present an opportunity for defect, which cannot be tolerated in critical applications. To produce a welded tube, strip is roll-formed and joined with a longitudinal seam. The weld area is dimensionally inconsistent with the strip and causes areas of stress concentration, particularly for tubes that are subjected to a high internal pressure. Furthermore, these crevices, or areas of stress concentration that exist on both sides of the weld seam create opportunities for corrosion as residue becomes trapped. These crevices can cause cracks, which can propagate and cause the welded tube to rupture.
Methods for manufacturing welded tubing are countless and allow for great variance in the final product. Many manufacturers have the option to use TIG, laser, or high-frequency welding. Some manufacturers then roll-reduce, bead-hammer, sink through a die, or draw the as-welded tubing over a mandrel or a plug in an attempt to minimize the dimensional variation and integrate the weld seam. These products are known by many names like welded-and-drawn, seam-free and seam-integrated.

Alloy 20 is alloy formulated of nickel, molybdenum, chromium and copper which equips it with distinguished resistance to acid attacks, general corrosion, crevice corrosion and pitting. The chemistry in the alloy defies the oxidizing environment that involves chlorides and sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and phosphoric acid. The alloy consists of niobium for equilibrium against sensitization delivering intergranular corrosion. The alloy has impressive mechanical properties at both nominal and extreme temperatures.

Heat treatment
Tubes are delivered in the heat treated condition. If another heat treatment is needed after further processing, the following is recommended.
Solution annealing
1100-1160°C (2010-2120°F), 10-30 minutes, quenching in water. Thin walled tubes can also be cooled rapidly in air.
Welding
Incoloy Alloy 20 possesses good weldability. Suitable welding methods are manual metal-arc with covered electrodes and gas shielded arc welding, such as TIG and MIG. The heat input should be 1 kJ/mm maximum and the interpass temperature 150°C (300°F) maximum. A stringer bead welding technique should be used. Welding should be undertaken without preheating and, if correctly performed, there will be no need for any subsequent heat treatment. To maintain full corrosion resistance of the weld joint, welding must be followed by thorough cleaning to ensure removal of all oxides and slag particles.
Oil and gas
Sanicro28 / Alloy 20 is used for production tubing, casing and liners in deep, sour gas wells. The material is also recommended for oil wells with a corrosive environment. For these purposes, tubes are supplied cold rolled with high strength. In the solution annealed condition, Sanicro 28 / Alloy 20 is also used as piping for transporting of corrosive oil and gas and for heat exchangers in treatment facilities. Sanicro 28 wirelines are used for lowering tools and controlling instruments in deep oil and gas wells.
Fluoride-bearing media
Fluoride-bearing off-gases can form during the manufacture of phosphoric acid and mixed fertilizers. These off-gases must be disposed of for environmental reasons. Sanicro 28 is ideal for this purpose. Tests have shown it to be preferable to higher alloyed CrNiMo grades for the recovery of fluoride-bearing gypsum.
Nuclear power plants
Due to its high resistance to SCC, pitting and crevice corrosion, Sanicro 28 / Alloy 20 has been selected for heat exchangers in nuclear power plants.
Seawater and chloride-bearing cooling water
Its high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion makes Sanicro 28 / Alloy 20 a very suitable material for seawater-carrying piping and seawater-cooled heat exchangers. This is confirmed by practical experience.
